Custom software or off-the-shelf?

Not every problem needs its own software. These points help you decide, and in the strategy call we tell you honestly when an existing product is enough.

Off-the-shelf is enough when

  • your process works like that of most companies in your industry
  • you want to start fast and need few adjustments
  • licences cost less over time than building your own

Custom software pays off when

  • your process is your edge in the market
  • several systems have to work together
  • workarounds and licences cost more than a solution that fits

What we build for you

In the order a project runs. We choose the technology for your product, not out of habit: each box shows what we mainly work with in that service and takes you to the service page with its process, all technologies and case studies.

How your project runs

Six steps from the first question to a product in use. The first one is free: in the strategy call we clarify goals, constraints and priorities.

  1. Clarify Direction

    Free

Your goals, constraints and priorities are clear to everyone involved before development starts.

  2. Define the Product

That clarity becomes a concrete product concept and a realistic delivery plan for you.

  3. Design the Product

We design user experiences that support adoption, usability, and long term maintainability.

  4. Build the Product

We build reliable, scalable software with clear ownership and predictable delivery.

  5. Launch & Operate

We support launch, stabilization, and transition into live operation.

  6. Improve & Scale It

We improve and scale the product based on real usage, business goals, and data.

Results from our projects

Three projects, three measured results. Each case study shows the starting point, the solution and the numbers.

App Room - #1 Bicycle ERP of Switzerland Strategy UI/UX App Room - #1 Bicycle ERP of Switzerland Cindy Essl Cindy Essl CEO, app-room GmbH 5.0 App Room is the leading ERP provider for bicycle retailers in Switzerland, supporting both small shops and large chains in managing inventory, sales, planning, and administration. As the product evolved over eight years, the interface no longer reflected modern expectations or the company's new brand identity. The goal was to redesign the ERP to reflect current design standards, incorporate user feedback, and create a maintainable design foundation without losing any functional depth. 25% less support effort Read case study weguide - Digitalisation of Tourism for Guides, Business and Cities Strategy UI/UX Website Back-End Mobile App Admin weguide - Digitalisation of Tourism for Guides, Business and Cities Sören Loos Sören Loos CEO, weguide GmbH 5.0 weguide was created to make urban exploration more authentic by connecting travelers with local stories, guides, and hidden places. Existing travel information was fragmented, outdated, or impersonal. The idea was to build a community platform where locals could create immersive tours using audio and video content, while travelers could easily discover and experience cities through a single digital product. At the same time, the platform was designed to enable creators to earn income from their tours. 20+ premium tours in first 3 months Read case study RMN Events – Digitizing the USA’s #1 Kids Wrestling League Strategy UI/UX Website Mobile App Back-End Admin RMN Events – Digitizing the USA’s #1 Kids Wrestling League Adam Gutierrez Adam Gutierrez President, RMN Events LLC 4.8 RMN Events operates one of the largest children's wrestling leagues in the United States. Core processes such as event planning, athlete management, result tracking, and revenue handling relied on paper, spreadsheets, and disconnected tools. The idea was to digitize these processes end to end and create a single platform supporting athletes, coaches, spectators, and employees before, during, and after events. 60% reduction of manual processes Read case study All case studiesMore projects sorted by industry, each with its starting point, solution and results.Read case studies

Data protection, code and operation

Three questions to settle before any contract. Our answers apply to every project, whether app, web platform or AI.

  • GDPR and hosting

Where your data lives follows your requirements: on servers in the EU or, if your product needs it, in the US. AWS and Google Cloud offer a data processing agreement (DPA) as standard.

  • Your source code

The source code is yours, and you always get it. So you can develop your product further with us or hand it over to a team of your own.

  • After go-live

Support follows the size of your product: for a small website, for example, a quarterly review as agreed; for larger products a monthly budget of hours for monitoring, maintenance and further development.

Frequently asked questions about custom software development

As a guide: a small project takes about 20 person-days of effort and goes live after about 4 weeks, a small customer app about 90 person-days and about 2-3 months, a large platform about 180 person-days and 3-6 months. How fast it goes in the calendar also depends on how many developers work in parallel and how fast approvals come. We agree the schedule with you after the free strategy call and report regularly on where your project stands.

For the development you get a price after the free strategy call for the scope we defined together, based on a quote or a requirements document. What comes after go-live is billed by effort: maintenance and further development, either with time records after a small quote or through a monthly budget of hours that we plan with you.

No. If your requirements are not written down yet, we work them out with you in consulting and strategy: in the step "Define the Product" the product concept and a realistic delivery plan take shape. We present the finished specification to you for approval, and from then on it is the binding basis for design and development. If you already have a specification, we check it for gaps and contradictions.

By evidence instead of promises: case studies with measured results, reviews from real clients and a process they can explain to you before the start. Also ask who owns the source code, who your fixed contact person is and how the product is looked after once it is live. With us the code is yours, as our terms state, you have a named project lead, and 96 reviews rate us 5.0 out of 5.

Vitec is based in Stuttgart, and the development is done exclusively by our own team. For your project we name a project lead and you name a contact person who can make decisions or bring them about. We put decisions in writing and report regularly on progress against the schedule. That way you always know what is being worked on.

In every step, with a clear division of work: in planning, AI checks requirements for gaps and contradictions; in design it generates variants and clickable drafts; in code it writes along, and it creates test cases that run automatically. Developers review every line and approve every change. At weguide this cut the time to market by 50%. How we bring AI into your product is on the AI development page.

That is normal, because the first drafts make a lot clearer. We assess a change with you for effort and its effect on price and dates, and put it in writing before we build it. New features that do not belong in the first version become a separate work package. That keeps the agreed scope predictable, and no idea gets lost.

Yes. We start with an analysis: how the software is built, which processes depend on it and where the risks are. Then we decide with you what stays, what is modernised and what is rebuilt. For MacTrade we migrated an existing online shop to Shopware 6, and for App Room we redesigned an ERP that had grown over years, without changing its business logic.
